The Department's canine program began in April 1995. At that time the unit consisted of a single handler and a single
purpose canine (narcotics detection). Today the Canine Unit has three full service canines capable of the functions
in patrol, narcotics detection, and tracking.
All officers and canines receive training through Tarheel Canine, Inc. located in Sanford, North Carolina.
